Joffe, Roland
   b. 1945, London
   Film-maker
   After working on television, Joffe went on to direct two unlikely 1980s blockbusters, The Killing Fields (1984) and The Mission (1985), for which he won Academy Award nominations and was hailed as the crest of the latest British wave to hit Hollywood. Up to, and arguably including, the egregious The Scarlet Letter (1995), Joffe had primarily made social conscience films (including City of Joy (1992), set in Calcutta) which had managed generally to combine sensitive subjects with box office success. His Spongers (1978), a television film about poverty in contemporary Britain, won the Prix Italia.
